I am 15.5 now and still studying. I have always liked computers and
technical stuff so i spend all my spare time alone with my pc. I want to
become a great programmer, but not necessarily as a career in the futere.
I studied C++ for more than 2 years on and off . I read some books
including Accelerated c++, deitel & deitel and others. Working through
these books only seemed to give me a very basic understanding and I could
still only use what i learned to write toy / pointless programs.
To try to develop further, i started looking at 3rd party libraries that
i might be able to use in my programs. In particular, i was interested in
the clanlib library which is a c++ library for games design. I hope that
this would give me better ability to write useful programs.
But I got trouble understanding what I am doing now and am wondering if i
am going down the wrong route in trying to learn clanlib. i read a book
by Eric Raymond and he said that to become a programmer, 'you wont get
there by reading books' - but by reading code & writing code. Thats why i
thought i would make more progress with clanlib.
I dont want to buy anymore books. i think i have more than enough now. (i
also have stroustrup's books, others by friedman & koffman, c++ in plain
english etc. Last year i was joined in accu but could not afford to keep
paying to be in it anymore so i dont get those magazines now. I suppose i
just want some re-assurance that i should stick to trying to learn
clanlib. Or is there another way to learn more that anyone can recommend
to me? Am i trying to run before i can walk - by studying 3rd pty
library?
What can i do to start writing real programs?
